Sam Cole has been on placement with GSC Grays, from Harper Adams University, since the beginning of July this year. These are Sam’s thoughts on his placement experience so far:
“The placement year offers a fantastic opportunity to build on the knowledge learned in the first two years of studying Rural Enterprise and Land Management at Harper Adams University. Being able to put this knowledge into practice whilst on placement will not only help with what has been taught in the first two years, but it also gives you an insight into what is to come in final year.
During my placement year, I have been able to start working towards my RICS – Assessment of Professional Competencies (APC). The APC process requires a minimum of 24 months training. I can carry out the first 12 months whilst on placement, leaving only a further 12 months, once I have graduated, to become chartered.
I also believe that the placement year improves employment potential. To have already done a year in practice, learning about the industry and working in an office environment is a big benefit to graduate employers.
With the Rural Chartered Surveying industry being so diverse it is very often difficult to decide which route is best to take. Being able to work within an area of the industry for just a year helps when returning to University for the final year and ultimately deciding on which route is best for you.
Finally, the networking opportunities are vast. Various RICS and CAAV events which are possible to attend give good opportunities to meet other professionals within the industry.”
Sam will be back at Harper on 24th November with the GSC Grays team for the Graduate & Placement Careers Fair!
