Environmental Stewardship (ES) and Countryside Stewardship (CSS)

Those claimants who have Environmental Stewardship and Countryside Stewardship agreements must complete an annual claim form, which will be sent out by Natural England and will need to be submitted by 16th May 2016 to receive their payment.  Natural England have started to send these out.

The launch of the new Countryside Stewardship Schemes (CSS) in 2015 by Natural England did not go smoothly and there was a limited uptake in applications. There are still ongoing delays in respect of Natural England offering agreements, which should have had a start date of 1st January 2016.   This has been caused in part by the RPA focusing on making 2016 BPS payments, which has led to mapping work taking a back seat, which has then caused delays in the CSS agreement paperwork being correct.

For those who are looking to apply for a CSS agreement for a 1st January 2017 start date, the application window will open from 1st June and close on 30th September 2016.

One off payments under the Woodland Creation Grants are now up and running and are being administered under CSS. Applicants have until 31st March 2016 to submit their initial woodland creation applications to Natural England. The full application must then be submitted by 31st May 2016.

Natural England has also announced that stand alone capital grants for hedges and boundaries were launched from 1st February 2016. The application window closes on 30th April 2016. These grants provide funding up to £5,000 for each SBI, with the focus being on restoration and not maintenance.   The application process is competitive with applicants needing to maximise points to increase their likelihood of success.
