December 2017 will be a busy month for the recently established Farm Business team of GSC Grays, as they help both existing and new clients understand whether they have received the correct money from their 2017 Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) Application.
The new team, headed by Robert Sullivan, is looking to actively help clients across the region understand their BPS payments.
Farmers should start to receive their BPS payments from 1st December 2017 although clarification as to how this sum has been calculated will not be made available by the Rural Payments Agency (RPA) until sometime later.
GSC Grays have developed a BPS calculator which will enable farmers to quickly check whether the payment received is correct with the only information required being the area that was claimed when the application form was submitted prior to the May 2017 deadline.
Robert advised “this quick check has a number of benefits to farmers who make use of it. Firstly, if the sum received is equivalent to the figure calculated then it gives reassurance that everything is in order. However, if the figure does differ then it provides clear evidence to the RPA that there is an issue which can be raised with them immediately.
For those who have yet to receive their payment the BPS calculator can also be used to calculate the likely payment due to them which will provide clarity when discussing financial matters with your Bank Manager or other key personnel within the business.”
The approximate payment rates for 2017 are indicated below, which are an increase of around 7% on 2016.
Approximate Payment Rates for 2017 | ||
Payment Region | £/ha | £/ac |
Non-SDA (Severely Disadvantaged area) | 228 | 92.00 |
SDA | 226 | 91.50 |
SDA Moorland | 63 | 25.50 |
“Farmers can check progress of their claim online or alternatively we can do it for them where we are registered as an authorised agent” said Robert. “Most claims have been at the “Claim Validation” stage until recently. They then move through to the “Final Checking” stage prior to “Preparing for Payment”. Once the claim has moved to these last two stages then it normally only a few days until the payment will be received.”
The Farm Business team does not solely provide advice relating to the Basic Payment Scheme. They have extensive knowledge and expertise in many areas including Agronomy Advice, Farm Management, Contract Farming, Share Farming Agreements and Joint Ventures, Farm Business Consultancy, Cross Compliance Advice, Farm Business Reviews and Restructuring and Grant Scheme Applications.
