In a recent interesting announcement, the Housing Minister (Brandon Lewis) has called for the nation’s former servicemen and women to consider new careers building the nation’s homes, and suggests that the sector would welcome the talent influx as an opportunity to address the UK’s house building shortfall.
With recent upturns in demand for the new-build sector, mass skills shortages continue to blight construction with 63% of our profession identifying labour shortages as an obstacle to development and 40% having to turn down work because of it. Housebuilding levels are now more than double those seen in 2009 – meaning developers need more skilled workers than ever. Mr Lewis has suggested that there is the possibility of harnessing the transferable skills of some of these ex-service personnel in order to fill gaps in all of the major construction trades as well as the wider project management needs across the sector, which will be vital to solving the UK’s housing shortfall.
Finding a workable solution to what some are classing as a ‘national emergency’ in British housing will require a supply-side revolution across all factors of supply, with the most important being labour.
‘Men and women who have served our country in our armed forces are well-equipped with the skills that the industry needs – such as opportunities in construction, civil engineering and the built environment sector.’ Brandon Lewis MP, Housing Minister
